What is STPD?

STPD stands for Standard Temperature and Pressure, Dry. It is a set of conditions used to express the volume of gases in respiratory physiology. Standard temperature is defined as 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), while standard pressure is defined as 760 millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Dry refers to the fact that the gas is not saturated with water vapor.

Why is STPD Used?

STPD is used to compare the volume of gases measured under different conditions. For example, the volume of air in a person's lungs can be measured at body temperature and pressure, saturated (BTPS), or at STPD. By converting the volume of air to STPD, it is possible to compare it to the volume of air in another person's lungs, even if the measurements were taken under different conditions.

STPD is also used to calculate the respiratory exchange ratio (RER), which is a measure of the ratio of carbon dioxide production to oxygen consumption. The RER can be used to determine the body's fuel source, as well as to diagnose certain medical conditions.
